Elephant

Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range host an estimated 5,465 elephants between them. South Western Mau holds about 951 more, together nearly 18% of Kenya’s elephant population.

Kenya’s mountain elephants still use ancient routes between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya, only about 12 km apart at the nearest ridge. Together those blocks hold an estimated 5,465 animals; South Western Mau adds about 951 more, a sizeable share of the national herd.

When farms sit on those routes, conflict follows. Grids on public roads, gated gaps, underpasses and one-way elephant gates let managers steer movement instead of blocking it entirely.

Scouts on patrol pull snares and report illegal entry; aerial and ground censuses every three years update population trends so fence plans match where elephants actually walk.
