Mount Kenya Fence Programme
Elephants still cross between Aberdares and Mount Kenya, but farms on the lower slopes needed relief. 316 km of a planned 450 km community fence is in place around the forest belt.
Problem: Mount Kenya’s forests supply the Tana and Ewaso Nyiro systems, yet elephant crop damage, degraded edges and fire risk stressed both wildlife and neighbours.
Action: In September 2012 the Mount Kenya Electric Fence programme launched to ring more than 2,700 sq km. Forest-adjacent community members build and maintain the line under KWS technical supervision. 316 km of the planned 450 km are complete.
Outcome: More forest edge is secured, local crews earn from construction and upkeep, and the programme sits alongside bongo monitoring, fire readiness and partner-led restoration on the mountain.
