Wildlife in the water towers
Meet the species whose habitats this work helps secure: black rhino in the Aberdares, mountain bongo across mountain forests, and elephants that make up nearly a fifth of Kenya’s national population in these water towers.

Protected in fenced Aberdare habitat
Black rhino
The Eastern Salient still holds one of Kenya’s most important black rhino concentrations, behind the fence that started Rhino Ark in 1988.

Critically endangered
Mountain bongo
Shy, striped and strictly montane: wild counts suggest fewer than 65 animals left, watched most closely on Mount Kenya trails and in Eburu’s thickets.

Endangered · mountain forests
Elephant
Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range host an estimated 5,465 elephants between them. South Western Mau holds about 951 more, together nearly 18% of Kenya’s elephant population.
